The Medan Old City Hall building is a colonial building located on Jalan Medan City Hall, North Sumatra.

This building was built during the Dutch East Indies era in 1908 by Hulswit & Fermont and renovated in 1923 by Eduard Cuypers (Pierre Cuypers cousin), another famous colonial architect of buildings in the Dutch East Indies.

The City Hall building is kilometer zero in Medan. This building was originally built for De Javasche Bank (now Bank Indonesia), then purchased by the Medan city government.[2] The bell was donated by the Tjong A Fie House in 1913.

The City Hall building is now part of the hotel and serviced apartment complex Grand City Hall Hotel, and is now functioning as a cafe.

The Medan City Council was formed in 1909 and the majority of its members are Europeans.
Along with the development of Medan City, in 1917 the City Council opened opportunities for natives, Chinese and Indians to become council members.

In 1918 Baron Mackay was elected as the first Mayor of Medan and it was he who used the City Hall Building for the first time.

In the same year a vote was also held to elect representatives of the natives and Chinese.
Raja Gunung and Muhammad Syaaf were elected to the City Council, representing indigenous people and Tan Boen An for ethnic Chinese.

In 1913, a Chinese businessman named Tjong A Fie donated a large clock made by the Van Bergen Firm to be installed in the City Hall dome.

In 1923, the building was refurbished by Hulswit and Fermont Weltevreden and Ed Cuypers from Amsterdam.

However, at present this building is not allowed to be renovated, except for building maintenance for painting the walls of the City Hall.

This is because the building is one of the cultural heritage buildings in the city of Medan.

Whatever the story that the old City Hall building is a witness to history. This means that the building has a long history that can not be ignored. It can not be denied, and this reality.
